A stately city just inland from France’s Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, known for its wine production.
Place du Peyrou, the city’s highest point, has excellent views and has a wide boulevard down the middle of its park. Its west end has a triumphal arch overlooking a pool and on the other side is a magnificent, 18th-century aqueduct running as far as the eye can see. To the north are France’s oldest botanical gardens, maintained by Montpellier University, one of the world’s oldest universities.
Rue du Bras de Fer is a narrow, medieval street with a secret sight through almost every portico, and another must-see is Place de la Comédie. This wide, pedestrian square is lined with street cafes and impressive buildings including the 19th-century opera house. Streets leading off contain high-end boutiques, while cheaper Montpellier shopping options are Le Polygone shopping center and the huge Odysseum leisure and shopping complex.
Other Montpellier sights include the 14th-century cathedral and the Antigone district with its grand Neo-Classical architecture. Also worth a look is the Musée Fabre art museum, and speaking of art, keep an eye out for the brightly decorated trams.
Before leaving your Montpellier hotel to go to Méditerranée Airport near the Cote d’Azur, sample some local seafood. The oysters are amazing!
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do.
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do. Excellent Tourist Information Centre that recommended a brilliant walking tour (in English). Loved a free photography exhibition (with English captions!) in the Pavillon Populaire near the TIC. I went to a concert at the Opera Comique and enjoyed good food but, sadly, no time for the Museum Fabre.
For a change of scene, I took a train to the coastal resort of Sete - well worth 12 euros!

The historical centre is quite small and easy to visit walking from place de la Comédie. Very good possibilities to travel with the trams. A lot of restaurants of all kinds and at very affordable rates.
Parc Du Peyrou and the aqueduct is a must see. The cathedral St Pierre is to be seen, inside as well as outside. Botanical garden is very well organised and counts numerous trees and plants.

Beautiful city.
Beautiful city. Lots of "old Europe" feel to it - tiny winding streets, quaint shops, numerous cafes. Very easy to walk but it also has a good tram system. It poured rain on my main day there, alas! I'm looking for places to retire to and Montpellier definitely ranks on it.

I filled my time very happily with a couple of excursions and a trip to Lette but could have done it in six days rather than seven. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Public transport is now free! Frequent trams take you to the outskirts, then buses for onward travel.
Train fares vary with each departure, some cheap and some can match British ones. There were a couple of delays on trains, it is a bit of a wild area and one was delayed for three hours or more as a train had collided with a wild pig!

Very nice city for the ones who like old architecture. So many beautiful squares, coffee shops, friendly people. The whole main area is walking distance with its narrow streets and so much charm. Worth visiting.

Montpellier is such a wonderful and popular destination it can get booked up easily! Beautiful old town and other parks and monuments, great cultural life, many conferences and concerts, excellent public transportation, lively student life, and it is close to the beach and wine country with easy access to lively hills filled with history (the Aveyron, the Cevennes).
Amazing and friendly staff. confortable bedding even though the rooms are on the small side. Nice breakfast (but scrambled eggs would have been nice), pool is nice but a bit small as the hotel was completely full and there were lots of people. Good location as the tram to take you to Montpellier is just a 3-4 minutes walk from the hotel. We unfortunately booked our trip last l’inusitée the rooms were expensive but the hotel is really worth it if you book in advance. We will definitely stay at this hotel again next time we go to Montpellier.
The hotel provides very basic accommodation so geared at budget traveller but it was clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower had great water pressure and heat. Internet worked fast. Check in was easy and the staff were very friendly. The hotel is in a safe area, a very short walk to both the train station and the main centre. The bus to the airport has moved to a different area and is a 20 min walk away from hotel so still easy to get to. Overall I would stay here again as it met my needs, was cheap and just what I needed.
We stayed in Montpellier for a night on our drive from Barcelona to the French Riviera. Staff was exceptional, Jose in particular who welcomed us was extremely helpful.
The hotel was a few minutes away from the centre that was bustling with residents and tourists alike. It did clear out on Sunday when it rained but It didn’t stop us from exploring the city! We didn’t have umbrellas but were fortunate that the Polygone mall - which is en route to the centre - was open on a Sunday and could purchase umbrellas to keep us dry.
Alexandre is an exceptional and generous host with a beautifully appointed room right in the heart of Montpellier. The space is charming and very comfortable, and the perfect location from which to explore the city and surrounding area. Alexandre also offers a wonderful massage, which you should not miss — it worked out all the tension in my neck like magic! Breakfast was delicious and fresh every day and a perfect way to start the morning. A fabulous host and stay, I hope to return one day, and urge you to do the same!
Our triple room (upgrade from the double) had good space for two of us taking a two day cycle touring break in Montpellier. It was comfortable and well equipped for our needs. A kettle, refrigerator, heated towel rack, good air unit, and English language channels on TV. We especially appreciated a slightly early check in and the great safe bicycle storage. Staff were very friendly. Great value midweek in March at €75. Breakfast was pretty good, but would be nice to have hot eggs and some vegetables.
so the best thing about this hotel was the staff, we had the most welcoming, smiling, chilling vibe from severely to not say all the people working there! from recommendation as to where to go to visit the city or where to have coffee and food they have been super helpful! the location is perfect, walking distance to everything, a short and cheap taxi ride from the airport!
The receptionist was very friendly and helped us with everything we needed. We arrived late so she figured out a way for us to enter the hotel without any obstacle. There was air conditioning that helped during the warm nights in Montpellier. The bed was comfortable enough for our 2-night-stay. It was not that far from the old town part, 10 mins by foot.
Location is perfect. On a quiet street, walking distance to train station and the main center of Montpellier.
The apartment is lovely, clean, well decorated. Lots of charming details. It's well maintained with everything you could need. Even bikes- which we used to bike out to the beach. The hosts are responsive, flexible and helpful.
Central location in lively neighbourhood, within walking distance from the Saint Roch train station. If your train arrives at the Sud de France station, you can take a shuttle bus / tram to the centre.
Cosy place with a personal touch, overall well equipped for a short stay.
Friendly and helpful host.
Was my second stay in this hotel, and once again i found the location to be perfect for access to the main Montpellier hospital sites nearby, where I had an appointment the next day.
I also loved the room, and the breakfast was very nice as well (especially the scrambled eggs which were delicious!)
Lovely hotel. Modern, clean. Nicely decorated rooms.
Staff is very professional and friendly.
Location is great, considering that the city centre of Montpellier is mainly pedestrian
Bonus: The bar is great and they have fantastic cocktails!
nice traditional French Hotel within walking distance to central Montpellier with great shopping and restaurants. Parking available but in a tight underground garage. There’s a farmers market Tuesdays across from the hotel.
A lovely place in a quiet section, not far from the heart of Montpellier--Place de Comedie. Wonderful reception. Delightful naming of private rooms after notable French authors, writers and luminari. Tres charmant!
Quirky modernised hotel with lots of updated technology - not easy to use. Comfortable and walking distance to centre of Montpellier. Quite as not fully open for the season.
The hotel is very close to the airport shuttle bus stop. The sound isolation of the building removes traffic noise effectively. The wifi speed surprised me positively.
