The room was a reasonable size, as far as rooms in Japan go. The train station is close by, but the noise from the trains were not too bad. Check in and out was quick and easy. We did not hear noise from the other hotel guests during our stay. There is a smoking area outside by the hotel entrance, so our room did not smell like smoke.

Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
Our spacious and comfortable room afforded us suberb views of the castle, which is lit up at night, albeit it will be under repair for some time yet following earthquake damage. The hotel is quite far away from the train station, but trams bring you nearby and there's also a (public) bus that runs between the two. The busy city centre, with its shops and restaurants, is a short walk away. Staff are English-speaking, efficient and helpful.
1. The staff were polite.
2. Hotel was clean.
3. Onsen was generally quite well kept.
4. Hotel was within walking distance to Josaien & Kumamoto Castle so it was really convenient.
5. There are 2 convenience stores on the way back to hotel from Tram Station so snacks and drinks could be purchased before returning to hotel.
The location is good with castle view in front and shopping street in the back. Exceptional service. The checkin is easy and good, even I arrive a little earlier, I can do it quickly and leave my stuff there then went out to explore the city, all my things were already in the room. The breakfast surprise me.
The hotel is new and modern. The location is superb being next to JR station and on top of the AMU plaza. the room is spacious and the facility is awesome. The public bath is new with great amenities. It’s perfect to relax after a full day of sightseeing in Kumamoto castle.
The biggest plus of this hotel is the location! It is right across from the castle and we could see the castel from our window. Additionally there is a drink bar on the top floor with a great view of the castle, which was a lovely place to wind down at the end of the day.
great location, near kumamoto train station and the shopping arcade area plus all the sight seeing around Kumamoto to see the castle, shrines and temples. Open the window for a great view of the canal which is running through the city. it's a typical business hotel.
The staff are polite and helpful, especially the man in the parking lot. He saw us carrying our luggage and he ran enthusiastically to help. Breakfast is good, so many choices to choose from. Location is good, just 700 meters to Kumamoto Castle.
Friendly, helpful reception staff, great location and wonderful views towards the Kumamoto Castle (as per the hotel's name), nice room with comfy bed and many appliances, coin laundry facility, alright for my visit to this interesting town.
Nice hotel, not too far from Kumamoto castle.
one lady from staff was fabulous and so lovely (made reservations and help us a lot!)
However, after going to their Fav hotel in Kagoshima we realized they can improve so much.
Friendly staff during breakfast and check-in/ out procedure. Room size typical for Japanese business hotel. Location is great for nightlife and restaurants. It's also only an 8 minute walk to Kumamoto castle.
The location was excellent. Right in the middle of the city and mins walk to the Kumamoto castle. The hotel has a parking lot. The room was tiny but okay. The hotel was very new and modern.
Super friendly & helpful staff, very clean room with comfortable bed. Good size space for a Japanese hotel room. Great location near tram stops, main thoroughfare & castle.
The room was comfortable and well designed. Our room had an excellent city view and Kumamoto castle. Bathrooms were spacious and downstairs patio area was a nice bonus
