Regrettably I didn’t spend much time in Charleston.
Regrettably I didn’t spend much time in Charleston. I deliberately booked this hotel to see the village and it is lovely. I did not expect the homeless and the property as close to the water to be as run down as it was. Clearly the $ benefit of waterfront property hasn’t hit Coos Bay, yet.
The hotel was in a good spot, for sportsmen, it is perfect.

Charleston has a couple of charter fishing boats.
Charleston has a couple of charter fishing boats. And an entire fleet of commercial fishing boats. I would think that it would be impossible to get anything other than a fresh fish meal here. Unfortunately, one establishment the Portside restaurant. Served frozen crab in my meal. Despite there being an entire fleet of fishing boats not more than 500 feet away

This is a working fishing community.
This is a working fishing community. It has plenty of rough edges, but excellent for a view of the fishing fleet and fishing port facilities. Some of the other people at motel had come in order to fish and crab, and the motel and nearby restaurants had facilities for cleaning and cooking the catch. At the motel and port side, the view was definitely industrial, with a lot of hardscape, but nearby parks were really beautiful, with lovely beaches and views of the coast. There were not many open restaurants; several places appeared to have closed because of Covid. We did find local places to eat, not gourmet style but friendly and very down home.

we have always loved this area.
we have always loved this area. We went to Shore Acres and saw the Christmas light display on New Year's Eve, which of course was beautiful. Love Chuck's Seafood; we always take home seafood from there because the prices are so reasonable. LOVE the High Tide restaurant; always the best food and wonderful staff. Very friendly town.
The hotel is great for fishing trips, crabbing, or just hanging out. Our problem was our neighbors. The person beside us was drunk, smoking in his room and up all night. The staff was awesome and moved us to another room away from him. Unfortunately, the new neighbors above us were loud and obnoxious and sounded like they were playing soccer until about 10pm. I dont know if the walls were exceptionally thin or they were very loud. It was unpleasant, and we left a day early because we couldnt handle it any longer.
Continental breakfast and good coffee. The rooms could definitely use an update, but our room was super clean and smelled neutral, unlike some other hotels that smell musty or smoky. Our favorite parts so far are the proximity to the marina and the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff/owners. We needed a very late check-in and this is a small town, and they accommodated this even though they close the lobby at night. They were helpful with directions and recommendations along the way as well.
This is our favorite motel to stay at. It's clean, priced just right, and the staff and owners are amazing!!!!! The rooms are great and the beds are comfy. They even have a family suite and rooms that come with kitchenettes. It's nicely located next to some great beaches..Bastendorff and Sunset Beach.. and close to Shore Acres Botanical Gardens. It's just a short drive to Bandon and we always stop at The beach at Seven Devils Wayside. We love love love Captain John's Motel.
Since Charleston is a fishing port, we didn't expect to find as nice of accommodations there. There is an excellent seafood restaurant within a short walking distance of the motel. It is minutes away from Cape Arago Lighthouse, Sunset Beach, Shore Acres,, Coos Bay Harbor Entrance Viewpoint, and Cape Arago State Park--all beautiful places to watch the sun go down. The low price and convenienent location were the two reasons we chose this motel.
For the price it was good . Very clean staff was very friendly. Older style room the bed could have been bigger thought it was a queen it was a double but comfortable. Had everything we needed . Breakfast was just a few pastries and bananas and apples .But again for the price it was something
I would not have been able to afford a hotel on a holiday weekend if they jacked up there prices like everyone else.
Good choice after leaving the north coast area. Friendly staff. Comfortable room. Other guests had been out on boats most likely and were in a room designated for cutting up or cleaning fish or crabs, etc.
Room had an optional kitchen for an extra fee which is probably very popular during the high season.
TV was okay. Keurig style coffee maker was available in the room along with a fridge and microwave oven.
I had never been to Charleston OR before. I loved the seaport/fishing surroundings. And Captain John's was exactly the kind of motel I like - not fancy but clean and everything worked well. And nearness to very good seafood restaurants was a plus. I would definitely come back again!
I requested an early arrival and was met with extreme kindness and they accomodated me quickly and politely. Super friendly people working there. Housekeeping was polite as well. It's located near the docks in Charleston and only a few minutes drive to the beach.
