Exactly as I would expect, clean, tidy, staff friendly. Still can't get used to the pillows budget Japanese hotels provide so I pack a little one. Apart from this the room is very comfortable. A cooked breakfast is not offered at this APA but muffins, toast and coffee provided in the foyer in the morning. Convenience stores close by if you wanted a cooked breakfast.

Wonderful location, wonderful staff and wonderful hotel overall. The moment you arrive you feel welcomed, the lobby gives the vibes of a 5 stars hotel. Its crazy that the hotel is located exactly at the train station (makes everything easier) and the building is so big that if you get a room on a high floor, you have wonderful mountain views. I really loved the staff, specially a receptionist that helped us with a dining reservation. Unfortunately I forgot his name, but he made our stay beyond special. THANK YOU.
It was overall such a nice stay, I loved Yamagata and its sorroundings. The staff seems to be professionally trained and they can also speak good english. They have many type of rooms, we had the classic double room and even though it was not modern, we had a LOT of space and everyday cleaning/water. If I ever come to Yamagata again I would definetly stay here and also recommend it to others. I even wish we stayed here longer!

The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic. It wasnt crowded, lessons for kids and adults were AUD$55 for 4 hours, lifts were @4$ per lift. Gear hire was AUD$65 for 2 days PP. In Australia lift passes are $250 per day alone. The hotel Sailor Hutte was literally at the base of the ski lifts. Food was cheap ($10-14 per meal) booze was cheap ($3.50 for a beer). The guys at the Hotel Sailor Hutte were great, make an effort to chat with them via your translator app. Its worth it. One more thing, I would recommend buying Shinkansen tickets directly from JR East rail online. Heaps cheaper than buying a seven day pass unless you are planning to spend 7 days on the train. FYI there are 3 Shinkansen companies East, Central and West. They have there own websites a bit clunky in English but it works. Good luck.

Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture.
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture. There are many places to visit and things to do. We rented a car and I believe this is a must if you want to sight see and time is an issue for you. By car from Yamagata train station, Zao Onsen is about 40-50 minutes away, Ginzan Onsen an hour, Yamadera about 20-30 mins. If you are into photography, there are many great landscape photos you can take here.

Not very famous place for travelingas not much to see in the city.
If you could have a car or rent one, could go more places.
Basically in Yamagata prefecture, public transportation doesn't cover much as it is not a prefecture mainly for sightseeing though there are several nice places to go.
Great, old school Japanese place to stay, right next to the gondola - its about a 20meter walk to the gondola entrance! And you can ski down the hill, right to the door. The room was nice and big with traditional tatami and futons.
Great staff - the owner speaks really good english and is really helpful - he has great suggestions for everything from Onsen to restaurants etc. They even helped me ship my snowboard with Kuroneko back to Narita.

In the Yamagata station with very big room, comfortable bed. Love the very beautiful Yamagata view from my room and delicious breakfast( select 1 set of Japanese style or western style which serve in different restaurants). Easy access to go around by rail and bus.
A department store with so many restaurants, cafe, bakery and supermarket also in Yamagata station.
I spent one night here and would have loved to stay longer. Hide-san created a little paradise in his house. As a solo traveller or couple, if you are looking for a social/local experience with long nights of talking and sharing with the other guests, this is the perfect place. Home-cooked dinner based on donation was the best food I've had in Japan so far.
Breakfast was good. Hope could be improved with different varieties everyday. The location just beside Yamagata station. Love how helpful the hotel staff is, he was trying hard to explain in English, and keep helping us during the stay. I love how they greet us everytime we passby the lobby lift. Thank you very much for making us warm!
I enjoyed the public bath, the convenience store on site. The location and the free parking was a real blessing. Nice city, friendly people, the hotel is a bit old but the room was larger than the room you get in more modern hotel. Awesome for people who enjoy Showa still accommodations.I would definitely stay rhere again
Great host, young and helpful. Plus listening to their own path breaking story was so much refreshing. Breakfast was simply awesome! After hearing from me that I like Japanese food a lot but do not cook at home, next morning they served me a delicious and unique Washoku breakfast. So much more value for the money you pay.
Spacious room, renovated ambience, good amount of amenities. Hotel staff were kind and very helpful. I stayed with family (2adult, 2kids) the twin beds were wide enough to accommodate. Room is bigger compared with similar range of hotels in Japan.
conveniently located near the station, about 10 minutes walk. plenty of eateries, near the Gyosai fresh food market, where you can choose your sashimi n make your own rice bowl!
love the hotel’s bathroom: rain shower, bath tub.
Perfect location for access to the city centre.
Hotel looked a bit dated but you couldn’t find fault: comfortable bed, amenities, good bathroom, tv, slippers, yukata,….
Beautiful view and lighting in the room. This hotel is more environmentally aware, and does a child sponsorship program I think. Breakfast was pretty good!
