Lovely small and old town which is the birthplace of st Dominic and the gastronomic heart of Umbria (think wild mushrooms, all sorts of pulses, summer and winter truffles, and every possible pork/boar product). Sadly many ancient buildings destroyed by 2016 earthquake but don't be put off - nobody died and little damage to more recent buildings. Visitors VERY welcome as economy needs help. Great excursions to the surrounding hills, breathtaking plain of Castelluccio, rafting. Local restaurants esp "al Teatro" recommended and good value.
Perugia was a good place to do day trips from to other villages in Umbria, many good restaurants, good chocolate made there. LaTaVerna is a good restaurant two other restaurant the hotel recommended were good and reasonably priced.Very clean place.
Spello is a great base for visiting the lovely walled medieval towns of umbria. Great food, art, architecture and friendly welcoming residents.
Great home base for touring Umbria. Tip: drive up to the old town if you plan to have dinner there. Restaurants do not begin serving until 7:30. The funicular quits at 8:00; couldn’t get a taxi or bus at 9:30 p. On a Saturday night! We had to walk down an old, long, dark service road at 10:00 p.m. to reach our car in the free train station car park!
Stunning city with fantastic history. We were visiting to attend the 25th anniversary of the Umbria Jazz Winter Festival Most restaurants provide options for those who are gluten intolerant. Two favorite restaurants - Il Malandrino Bistrot and Antica Cantina di Orvieto. Buy the card which provides access to all of the historic sites. Well worth the 20€. Wear comfortable walking shoes!!
Perugia is a great place to base out of for travel in Umbria and Tuscany. You could spend a day or two checking out the town too and have plenty to do.
We bought an apartment in Fabro, in the historic district, across from the castle. The town is small, no restaurant but two snack bars, post office, and large grocery store. Fabro is a hilltop Umbrian, working class, "real" Italian village, not a tourist spot. It's claim to fame is an intact 12th century castle, which has been converted to apartments. Don't expect English speaking people. Learn some Italian if you want to stay awhile and communicate with anyone. There is a B&B in the castle. Fabro has great views from almost anywhere in town. At the bottom of the hill about 10 minutes from Fabro, is Fabro Scalo. A much larger town with all the amenities for shopping and dining. Fabro Scalo has a train station on the main route between Rome and Florence. Likewise, it is on the A1, the main North-South highway in Italy.
Gubbio is a beautiful ancient hill town. It is worth a visit and is generally easy to get to if in Umbria. There are numerous good restaurants and cafes. Walking the town and the hillside provides many fabulous views of the valley and special discoveries inside the City itself.
Castiglione is small old town, with a big history, on/in a big lake, on the border of Umbria and Tuscany. Beautiful landscapes; excellent wines and food, and the most warm and welcoming "real" people.
Sant'enea is small town Italy with comforts. Grocery store, pharmacy,a pizzeria, and fuel on a ridgeline, central to travelling throughout all of Umbria and Eastern Tuscany. We did 10 day trips from this one location.
Orvieto
The hostess was exceptional! When the whole city had a wifi problem briefly and the modem/router needed to be re-set, she came over immediately and resolved the issue. The apartment was very clean, welcoming, a fabulous stone wall and decorated well. The kitchen is well stocked and the bathroom has a very modern shower. The location is very central, but in a courtyard that makes the apartment very quiet. It is the perfect place to both base a visit in Orvieto and to travel around Umbria.
Very nice & helpful staff (for instance sending directions on where to best park & how to get to the hotel). Very quiet location, just a short walk down from or up to the beautiful city centre. Easily accessible from the Piazzale Umbria Jazz (free parking) where you can take the MiniMetro for €1.50 right up to the old city (15min). From there it is a short walk down to the hotel. The room I had was decently large (as was the bathroom), with a balcony overlooking the small alley.
Spoleto
Perfect location to the city center as well as to very local stores outside the wall. The room is spacious, clean and well-maintained. The parking, which is next to the room, is available for free. Strongly recommend this apartment even for a family with small children. For international travelers: Spoleto is a hidden gem in Umbria. Since Spoleto is not a city relies sorely on tourism, you can find historical aspects of Italy and at the same time the normal life of Italian people.
Great location in center of historic city and very close to major sites and lots of restaurants. Hotel has lots of charm as the building is very old. Rooms are quant and smallish. Breakfast is very good, however only cold choices. From Perugia Central train station, take either bus or mini-metro (our favorite) to historic city center and then hotel is then just a few minutes walk. Using mini-metro between hotel and train station allowed us to explore other cities in Umbria
If you are planning to visit Umbria, Italy or just going on vacation, visit Leonardo at Torre Palombarra, it is a real treat! This amazing small get away in the hills of Umbria is an excellent place to relax and explore. We spent five days in Leonardos hospitality, but we could literally have stayed for months. Leonardo and family with staff are the friendliest and most welcoming I have ever met, and are leading examples for future reference. Thank you for our visit!
Pietrafitta
We were travelling from Norway for a family vacation in Italy, exploring the amazing Umbria. We stayed in Abbazia for two nights, and regret that we didn't book more. The atmosphere is fantastic, very calm and relaxing. We really enjoyed the slow mornings dedicated to reading and painting. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Abbazia has a fantastic restaurant (when opened) with great food and atmosphere. We really would love to come back one day.
The room had a beautiful view of Perugia and Umbria green valley. The hotel was very conveniently located at heart of the city with walking distance to almost everywhere. We walked to Fontana Maggiore, Pozzo Etrusco (Etruscan Well), University of Perugia...The breakfast was excellent with many selections. The most impressive was the hotel SPA and swimming pool. Under it's glass floor, there was Etruscan wall and part of old chamber.
Santa Maria degli Angeli, Assisi
A truly lovely and friendly family-run hotel a few minutes walk from both the Basilica and the train station. My single room backed onto a sunlit terrace, included all conveniences, and was a welcome refuge after excess sightseeing. The restaurant downstairs offered hearty Umbrian cuisine and a wonderful vegetable soup. I found Francesco and the family very warm and ready to help me with any needs. The price is nice, as well.
Amelia
I visit this wondrous palazzo time and time again. It is the essence of Italy - Timeless design, well thought out comfort, walkable location, warm and welcoming staff. Patrizia, the owner, is a beautiful force of nature, greeting guests personally, provisioning the linen cupboards with exquisite vintage pieces, and filling the rooms with tasteful and cozy furnishings. This property is a must on your visit to Umbria.
The city center of Perugia is an interesting place with all of the quirks of being a modern city within medieval walls. The Hotel Umbria is part of that charm being hidden within the backstreets of the city center. It is perfectly placed to enjoy the history of Perugia. The staff gave great recommendations on sights and restaurants. Convenient to the train station via the minimetro. Would gladly stay there again.
Foligno
Eleonora is an incredible host. All the details you can think of will be adjusted and adapted according to your needs and circumstances. Great location just a few steps away from the beautiful centre of Foligno, le stanze di Angelina is an ideal stay to appreciate all the beauties the region of Umbria can offer. When back to this amazing part of Italy, we have no doubt where to stay again. See you soon Eleonora!🙂
Perugia
I had a wonderful experience at this property 15 years ago and was excited to return, and glad that I did. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchen them and updated bathroom, with lovely views. The location is perfect for visiting other towns, which can be reached in about 30 minutes in any direction. We stayed for 9 days and could have used a few more days. The Umbrian region is underrated.
Restaurant was excellent for dinner and breakfast in terms of food, service and wondeful terrace views over Umbrian countryside towards Perugia. The hotel interior and the gardens all lent themselves to a wonderfully relaxed stay with plenty of room to roam, and endless tranquil seating spots in the shade and sun to read and relax. All of the staff were welcoming, considerate and raised the mood.
Panicale
It was a great stay at Casolare Marconi! Apartment was really spacious, beautifully furnished and fully equipped. The surrounding looked just like in the movies (olive trees and oleanders, view for historical Umbrian towns located on the hills). Owners were super nice and helpful. I recommend stay at Casolare Marconi for both families and group of friends.
The view from our room was so amazing. With the door that opens and a terrace to view the Umbrian countryside, it made the first visit to Assisi wonderful. This is clearly more than a hotel but an upscale experience close to all that Assisi has to offer. The staff at every area were helpful, cheerful and well knowledgeable about the entire area.
Perugia
The host Maria was fantastic. She has welcomed us on arrival and was very helpful with recommending places to eat out, best parking locations etc. The apartment itself was very clean and had all that is needed for a family stay. The location was close to the airport and it was very good for when planning to drive around Umbria. Thank you Maria !
All good, clean and super nice staff! The hotel is a mix masterpiece of wine, jazz and great food! Restaurant is a starred Michelin serving Slow Food products. The hotel is also one of the top 43 winehouses in Italy. And it provides free commuting to the Umbria Jazz concerts! Couldn’t be more happy than that! And O look forward to go there again!
This is a very sweet hotel with lots of beautiful outdoor spaces for guests to enjoy--both a shady garden area and an upper balcony with an unbelievable view over the Umbrian countryside. The breakfast was very nice. The location couldn't have been better. The room was a nice size, and the bed was very comfortable.
Standard design spacious hotel rooms with modern comfort in a historic building. Free car park with easy access and night surveillance. Excellent breakfast including local specialties. Friendly staff. Perfect location to visit Assisi and the wider Umbria region. It's also close to railway and bus station.
Orvieto
Beautiful location- Umbrian farmhouse with a view of Orvieto and a 10 minute drive to the town. House is on a farm, but the rooms are comfortable hotel rooms. Lovely hostess Angela, who went out of her way to help arrange side trips during our stay. Comparable to hotels that cost 2-3 times as much.
